REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsDec 4 (Reuters) - Intel (INTC.O) and Siemens (SIEGn.DE) on Monday announced a three-year deal to collaborate on improving factory efficiency and automation with a special focus on improving energy efficiency and sustainability. The partnership with Siemens will help Intel operate the factory more efficiently, Esfarjani said. EUV, an energy-hungry technology, is so central to advanced chipmaking that significant parts of the manufacturing process revolve around it. The partnership with Intel will help Siemens deepen its understanding of this type of manufacturing where one technology is so core to the process and help it transfer that know-how to other industries. In that case, Siemens assisted with its transition to manufacturing electric vehicles from combustion engines.

But Midwestern cities are also facing a crisis of their own — struggling to attract workers, residents, and visitors to their downtowns. Nine of the 13 Midwestern cities tracked in the study were in the bottom half of the rankings. In the early part of the 20th century, Midwestern cities boomed — attracting workers and families seeking out manufacturing jobs and education. Many Midwestern cities relied on a single industry or even a single company to buttress its economy. "If office workers are coming downtown less, but college students are willing to come downtown more, what about literally putting a college in your downtown?"

HALF MOON BAY, Calif/FRANKFURT, Jan 17 (Reuters) - U.S. chip giant Intel Corp (INTC.O) is committed to building its chip fabrication plant, or fab, in Magdeburg, Germany and is working out funding details with the government, according to Chief Global Operations Officer Keyvan Esfarjani. “We are committed to making the Magdeburg project successful,” Esfarjani told Reuters on the sidelines of Industry Strategy Symposium, a chip conference by Semi last week in Half Moon Bay, California. When asked about Intel's investment, Germany's economy ministry's spokesperson told Reuters the government was in "constant exchange with Intel and the European Commission" about the project. In March Intel announced Magdeburg as the site for its new mega chip manufacturing complex, a key part of its $88 billion investment drive across Europe. Last week Italy's government also reiterated that it was determined to secure and investment by Intel.
